Faculty Profile for Professor Giurgea

Someone very bright, Anton Ego, in Pixar’s Ratatouille, said: “Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.” This FSEM, being a basic acting class, is more than an introduction to your first steps into adulthood. It is an invitation to grow, to learn, to experiment, to work hard. And, also, a reassurance that not forgetting how to play is essential, that our knowledge of the world is the equivalent to the set of experiences that we have had, and that our communication is limited by the number of stories we know to tell. Students learn that storytelling and understanding are, actually, the same thing. Along the way, students discover that theater is a miraculous country where people speak a language that deserves to be learned. Students who successfully complete this seminar receive credit for THEA 254 and satisfy one half of the human thought and expression areas of inquiry requirement.

Adrian Giurgea received his PhD in Theater from UCLA. He directed about 100 professional and countless other academic productions in Italy, Romania, Russia, Estonia, Israel, Georgia, and the US; prior to Colgate, he taught acting and directing at UC Berkeley, UCLA, Hamilton College, University of Utah, San Jose State University, Pomona College, California State University Long Beach, and the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.
