ARTS 100 A: Fakes Illusion, imitation, and replication are recurring aesthetic concerns in both traditional and experimental arts practice. In Fakes, we explore these concerns using a range of media in order to alter perceptual phenomena. Students construct multiple projects that perform as something other than what they are. Through deep observation, rigorous making, and exposure to contemporary artists, students gain a strong understanding of the role of the facsimile, trompe l’oeil and other visual trickery in art. Issues tied to the copy, to remix, to mechanical or digital reproduction may also be explored. Careful looking and thinking about visual art are key elements of the course, and are vital to any art practice. The course is designed to both familiarize students with the field of contemporary art practice, and help them to identify the ideas and processes that are meaningful to them.
