Faculty Profile for Professor Guez

Israel is often associated with conflict, as well as popular tourist destinations such as ancient Jerusalem and the blue beaches of Tel Aviv. In addition, Israel's savory and delectable Mediterranean cuisine is renowned worldwide, with popular dishes like hummus and falafel being among the most beloved. However, Israel's complex and diverse ethnic society is frequently overlooked. This course thoroughly examines Israeli society's multicultural makeup through its cinema, literature, music, and cuisine, using scholarly sources. The course will delve into the experiences of various ethnic and religious groups, including Jewish immigrants from Morocco, Russia, and Ethiopia, as well as non-Jewish minorities like the Druze and Bedouins. Students who successfully complete this seminar earn credit for JWST 181 and can satisfy the Human Thought & Expression area of inquiry requirement or the confronting collective challenges liberal arts practice requirement.

Anat Guez, who teaches Hebrew and Israeli culture, is excited to explore with you the unique blend of ancient values and traditions with modernity that characterizes Israeli culture.
