Faculty Profile for Professor Lutman

How to begin? How to sound? How to decide what to include? Writers face countless choices, and choices can feel especially difficult in unfamiliar writing situations, including situations where expectations feel arbitrary or “subjective.” Students explore writing as choice-making and devote special attention to voice and style. Students have guided freedom to experiment with new techniques and technologies as they learn to make ethical and increasingly informed, intentional choices as writers. Emphasis is on learning to write successfully for audiences at Colgate and beyond in one's own, distinctively human voice. Readings include model essays, including essays by current and former Colgate students. Students who successfully complete this seminar earn credit for WRIT 210 and can satisfy the human thought and expression area of inquiry requirement or the artistic practice and interpretation liberal arts practice requirement.

Jenn Lutman directs the Writing and Speaking Center and specializes in the teaching of writing. Her other interests include poetry, linguistics, and linguistic justice.
