What was, and is, it like to speak Latin? What would it be like to read Latin and be able to hear in one's mind the phrasing and tone; and to feel the movement of passages and so be able to translate with greater speed and fluency? Toward these goals, students who have completed their introduction to Latin (completed or concurrently taking LATN 201) begin using Latin as a medium for spoken communication. Through visual clues, physical activities, and selected passages of Latin, students master essential concepts common to both the literary and the spoken registers of the language and develop a facility with everyday vocabulary. The repetition of common grammatical structures and essential vocabulary not only lead students to oral proficiency but strengthen reading ability and the interpretation of texts.
