How does religion interplay with visual and material culture? Students examine how religious ideas and concepts take the form of visual art, material objects, film, and architecture. Topics of study include depictions of themes such as creation, ritual, salvation, ancestral veneration, and ecstatic feeling that are associated with a range of traditions, such as Christianity, Islam, Vodou, and Santeria. In addition to an introduction to tools of visual and object analysis, students also gain an understanding of how sensory engagement is central to religious belief and practice as well as how religious questions and ideas often animate artistic and creative expression.
