Oklahoma embodies the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies, the diversity, and the weirdness of the American experience. It is America’s most Native state, home to some 38 federally recognized tribes, but it is also its most quintessential state, one that displays both the ugly and beautiful character of the country as a whole. Students explore the many aspects of Oklahoma identity, from the ancient Indigenous inhabitants to the Trail of Tears, from the Tulsa Race Massacre to The Grapes of Wrath, from the musical Oklahoma! to the groundbreaking comedy Reservation Dogs. Throughout, Students pay particular attention to how Indigenous identity and perseverance have shaped what we now know as Sooner State.
