A multidisciplinary survey of the varied communities that make up contemporary France. Students focus on France as a leading member of the European Union and as a global power, as a former major colonial power, and as a leader in the arts. Using history, films, photography, and literature, students examine France's efforts to come to terms with its colonial past; its self-examination of World War II and the Holocaust through the "politics of memory"; the different "communities" within France itself--youth, religious groups, urban life and the countryside, the communities of refugees and immigrants; and its vibrant culture, with a particular focus on French cinema. Students also examine France's historic and current relationship with several parts of its former empire: Algeria, French Polynesia, and French Guiana.
