Faculty Profile for Professor Wang
An introduction to the basic approaches to international relations, such as realism, liberalism, and constructivism. Students also consider fundamental problems of national security, including the uses of power, the causes of war, deterrence, conflict escalation, and nuclear proliferation; international political economy; international institutions and law; and transnational issues such as climate change and human rights. Students who successfully complete this seminar satisfy the Social Relations, Institutions, and Agents areas of inquiry requirement or the Confronting Collective Challenges liberal arts practice.
Professor Frances Y. Wang is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Colgate University. She teaches courses in international relations, including Fundamentals of International Relations, along with classes on East Asia, Chinese foreign policy, and media and world politics. Her research focuses on international security, authoritarian media, public opinion in international conflict, and Chinese foreign policy. She is the author of The Art of State Persuasion: China’s Strategic Use of Media in Interstate Disputes (Oxford University Press), and her work has been published in leading academic journals and public outlets. Before joining Colgate, she taught at Singapore Management University and held research fellowships at the University of Notre Dame, George Washington University, and the United States Institute of Peace. She received her Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Virginia.
